Today, I learned that Robert E. Lee went to the same church as George Washington. During our tour of the Mount Vernon estate, we were really transported to the past. Each room was preserved just as the Washingtons left it and came equipped with a tour guide ready to explain everything in front of us. Some were even in costume. The tour was great because our guide had been touring for 30 years and he took us to Old Town Alexandria and Mount Vernon where we got to see Washington's tomb, church, and gorgeous estate. The man had a view of Maryland from his house for crying out loud! What made it all really special was that even during the bus ride, not a second went by where we weren't being told the historic origins of everything we passed. History buff or not, this guided tour is the right mix of educational, interactive, and most importantly, fun. Not to mention, it's the perfect activity to do with your parents.
